22/4/2017 Hallin Fell

Saturday April 22nd
Hallin Fell, nr Pooley Bridge - Level DTry it!

Parking: by the church (Saint Peter's) and on the roadside. Limited parking and it's a popular area with walkers and families so please car share wherever possible, park as close together as possible and with consideration for others. Alternatively make an outing of it and catch the steamer to Howtown and walk up to Hallin Fell.
Registration: grid ref NY435192
Starts: Any time between 1100 -1200, courses close 1400.
Fees: Adults £3.50, Juniors £1.50
Courses:
Orange (easy) 2.5km, 180m climb
Short Green (advanced) 2.4km, 220m climb
Green (advanced) 3.6km, 250m climb
Terrain: Open fell. Mostly very run-able, with bracken well and truly died down. Some steep terrain and areas of scree - the major areas are mapped. Due to the steep terrain, all courses contain a fair bit of climb. Judicious route choice will reduce this. There are lots of crags, some quite substantial. Courses have been planned taking these into account but competitors should be aware of their surroundings and avoid taking routes which will put them at risk. The orange course will have two short sections between controls one and three which will be taped to highlight a linear marsh/stream which is indistinct in a couple of places.
Hallin Fell is exposed and competitors are asked to dress appropriately for conditions. In the event of poor weather cags may be made compulsory. Whistles compulsory.

Please wear appropriate outddoors clothing and footwear. Bring a compass if you have one. Maps are provided on the day, but do let us know if you intend to bring a large group - pay per map.
You can see a map of the area from our 2016 event here.
If you aren't used to o maps, basics for this area are: yellow is open land, pale brown is open rough grass, white is trees, various greens show denser wooded areas and olive green is gardens.

Note from Gerry: we can provide dibbers* and I will be at registration to offer some help for those who haven't used them before. The event is in an enclosed area therefore nobody should get vastly lost.
There will be tea, coffee and cakes for sale at this event courtesy of the planners daughter who is fund raising to go on a scientific research trip to Mexico

*'dibbers' are small data cards worn on a finger for recording which control points (orange and white markers) you visited, and your course time. ALWAYS let the organiser know you are back, even if you don't finish your course. Results are published later on our website - often the same day.
